Before renting an apartment -- What to look at and to ask?

Before entering the apartment, you’d better look at the lawn, the shrubbery, the trash around the building, the windows and the general condition of the building. All these indicate a lot about the general maintenance of the apartment. For the windows, you should notice if there are any broken windows and if the building has storm windows. Living in an apartment without storm windows means the heating fee will be expensive.

When you decide to enter the apartment to take a look by yourself, and if the tenant is still living there, it would be a perfect opportunity to ask questions about the feeling of living there. But you should image what the apartment will look like without their furniture and with yours instead. The apartment looks good with their furniture does not mean it will also looks nice with yours.

Look at the walls and try to detect if there are any cracks in them, or if a paint job is needed. Also look under the sink to make sure that the plumbing is in order. Try the tap; make sure the water pressure is strong enough. Check out the bathtub and consider if it’s comfortable to bath in there.

And finally, you should ask following questions from the landowner:

  • How much is the rent?
  • Are heating and hot water included in the rent?
  • Are there any city taxes to pay?
  • Are there any other extra fees?
  • Is there any parking?
  • Is there any building security, and what kind (guard or cameras)?
